Owning a business is risky, challenging, and, at times, intimidating. It is also one of the most rewarding of life’s experiences. My time in business has taught me a lot so far. These are five of the best lessons that I have learnt.

1. You cannot do it all alone.

Even if you are a solo entrepreneur, you need to have people on your side. I am fortunate to have found a group of like-minded, ambitious friends who are a sounding board for ideas. Entrepreneurship is stressful and exhausting. Sometimes, you just need people around who keep you motivated and to be your personal cheerleaders. The ability to vent your frustrations to people who understand the entrepreneurial experience is invaluable.

2. Be flexible.

By nature, I am an extremely organized person. I am also a stickler for punctuality and structure. These traits are beneficial in the day to day operations of my business. However, I have learnt the importance of flexibility to be able to successfully accommodate my clients’ needs.

3. Commit to the long-term vision.

Knowing why you are in business keeps you motivated and helps you to persevere even when you don’t feel like working. Committing to your long-term vision can be the difference between success and failure. Your ‘why’ is your inspiration; it is the entire reason for your existence as an entrepreneur. When you remember why you started your business in the first place, you can refocus your energy and continue your journey.

4. Health is a key asset.

Too often I see entrepreneurs glorify unhealthy behaviour in the name of the business. Running a business can take a physical toll on you. However, it is important to recognise that your health is one of the biggest assets of your business. I enjoy the benefits of exercise on my physical and mental wellbeing.

5. You are responsible for your own future.

Life owes you nothing. Your ultimate success depends on the choices you make. There is no easy recipe for success. Entrepreneurship requires demanding work and sacrifice. Indeed, you must put in the work if you want to be successful.

I look forward to having many more learning experiences as I continue my entrepreneurial journey.
